RICHMOND COUNTY, Va. ( WRIC / DC News Now ) — Many Virginia residents have reported seeing an object hurling through the sky early Tuesday morning. But what was it?

The spectacle was not a comet or a plane, but, in fact, the launch of SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket for its Polaris Dawn mission from Florida, according to the Associated Press .

The Associated Press reported that a group of multiple people are aboard the rocket, including tech entrepreneur and billionaire Jared Isaacman, a pair of SpaceX engineers and a former Air Force Thunderbirds pilot.

AP further reported that the group aims to carry out the first private spacewalk and go further than anyone since NASA’s Apollo moon shots. The spacewalk is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12, halfway through the five-day flight.

One viewer from DC News Now’s sister station, 8News, shared photos of the SpaceX rocket on the morning of Sept. 10 from the town of Warsaw in Richmond County.

Another viewer captured a photo of the rocket while on a morning run in Powhatan County.
