CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 14-year-old Meadowbrook High School student is facing charges after police said he claimed to have made a bomb and shared a photo of a fake explosive device.

The Chesterfield County Police Department received a report from school officials about a possible explosive device just after 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9.

According to police, the 14-year-old boy texted an adult known to him and said he’d made a bomb. He sent the adult a photo of what appeared to be a bomb, then added that the device was fake. The adult contacted school officials, who then contacted the police.

Officers responded to Meadowbrook High School and found the student there. According to police, additional officers joined members of the Virginia State Police Bomb Squad in searching the teenager’s residence.

No explosive device was found at the student’s home. According to a police spokesperson, the apparent bomb was a “hoax device” that was not explosive.

The student has been charged with making threats to bomb or damage buildings and the manufacture, possession, use, etc. of fire, bombs or explosive materials or devices, according to police.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. No additional information is available at this time.
