WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Police in D.C. are on high alert Tuesday, maintaining a heavy presence in some neighborhoods hit by burglars overnight.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said it’s investigating at least seven burglaries in five different neighborhoods overnight Monday into early Tuesday. Any connection between the burglaries remains under investigation, according to MPD.

Witnesses who spoke with DC News Now about the burglary in CityCenter, near 10th and I St. in Northwest, said they had never seen so many officers in one place before.

“It was just like a different world,” neighbor and witness, Erin Reeve, said. “About 20 or 30 people, dressed in all black, it looked like they were coming out of the Gucci store. They were running in all different directions.”

Officers showed up in dozens at that scene in Northwest. Reeve said she saw officers carrying riot shields. Other officers were seen on video wearing face shields as helicopters swirled overhead.

Reeve described the situation as “terrifying” as she watched the scene unfold.

“Are they armed? What do I need to do to protect myself and stay safe?” she asked.

Five people in total have been arrested as police investigate those seven robberies. Two people were arrested near CityCenter.

On 14th St., NW, north of Columbia Heights, police said burglars broke into the Lifted Life Kicks store. The store was boarded up Tuesday afternoon. MPD said they got away with more than $10,000 in stolen bags and shoes.

Three people were arrested in connection with the burglary of the Black Cat, also on 14th St.

In Georgetown, business owners and workers were seen cleaning up the mess left behind after at least two liquor stores were broken into along Wisconsin Ave., NW.

Police released photos of suspects wanted in connection to a third burglary in the same neighborhood overnight.

One local business owner along Wisconsin Ave., NW, Anne Freeman, said those burglaries are too close for comfort.

“It makes me feel angry and it makes me feel sad,” Freeman said. “We’re a neighborhood. We all know each other.”

Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice, Lindsey Appiah, released a statement on X regarding the incidents.

“While we support the right to peacefully protest, crime and violence will not be tolerated in our city,“ Appiah stated in her post.

DC News Now reached out to MPD and the Mayor’s office to see if the robberies are connected to protests following the release of police body camera video of the deadly shooting involving violence interrupter, Justin Robinson, and neither are confirming the connection.

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office confirms she’s been briefed on the situation, but didn’t offer additional comments to DC News Now.
