    DMV community remembers lives lost on 9/11

    ARLINGTON, Va. ( DC News Now ) — Wednesday marks the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed 2,996 people on September 11, 2001.

    Several remembrance events are taking place across the DMV where families can honor and remember the lives lost.

    Pentagon staff unfurled a large American flag on its west side at sunrise on Wednesday morning.

    Arlington County leaders, staff, first responders as well as community members remembered those who lost their lives on that tragic day 23 years ago.

    The County’s wreath-laying ceremony took place at about 9:30 a.m. at the Ellen M. Bozman County Government Center.

    A moment of silence was also held at 9:37 a.m. when the plane hit the Pentagon and killed 184 people.

    Those who attended the wreath-laying ceremony in Arlington highlighted the importance of never forgetting this day.

    “When we say never forget, our remembrance must include the commitment of our nation’s armed forces. Their enduring sacrifices cannot go unrecognized,” said Captain David Santini with the Arlington County Fire Department.

    In Maryland, The National Harbor is honoring the first responders and canine units from Prince George’s County with a complimentary dinner in the Capital Canopy followed by remarks from first responders.

    13 prizes will awarded to first responders who RSVP’d to the event.

    The prices include dinners at the National Harbor restaurants such as Fogo de Chao, a party for 10 at Bobby McKeys and VIP tickets on The Capital Wheel and more.

    The event is taking place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

    In Annapolis, the U.S. Naval Academy placed 2,977 U.S. flags in remembrance of the lives lost on 9/11.

    Midshipmen in Annapolis also plan to hold a flag run and moment of silence.
