NEW CARROLTON, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Prince George’s County Public Schools ( PGCPS ) is reaching a new milestone as they break ground on one of eight new school buildings Thursday morning.

It’s all a part of PGCPS’s “Blueprint for Schools” project to build several new schools across the county.

With growing enrollment overcrowding and old school buildings has been a concern for years, and that’s all changing.

Last year PGCPS finished Phase I after building and opening up six brand-new schools.

This week the school system will host several groundbreakings for the eight schools for its Phase II.

This includes Springhill Lake, Fairwood Area, Templeton, Hyattsville, Margaret Brent and James Duckworth elementary schools, Brandywine Area, and Robert Frost Area Pre-K.

Robert Frost Elementary’s school building has been standing for more than 50 years. Sept. 12 marks change as school officials break ground on a new building.

The elementary school will be one of two new K-8 academies.

Each newly built school will be a net-zero school powered by renewable resources.

The change will impact more than 130,000 students and 22 thousand district employees.

These eight new schools are expected to be completely finished starting in summer 2026 to summer 2028.
