    BPD: Bowie police officer fires weapon on Route 197, no injuries

    BOWIE, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Bowie Police Department (BPD) said Collington Road, Route 197, was closed after an officer fired their weapon on Thursday morning.

    According to BPD, around 8 a.m. on Sept. 12, a Bowie police officer stopped to assist a driver on Collington Road and John Hanson Highway, Route 50. Police said the officer believed the driver was stranded.

    Details remain limited; however, BPD said when the officer approached the vehicle they fired their gun.

    BPD said no one was injured, but a vehicle driving past the scene was struck.

    At this time, it is unknown why the officer discharged their gun and the shooting is under investigation.

    “It’s fortunate that no one was injured in this incident. We remain committed to serving the residents of this community,” said Chief Dwayne A. Preston.

    BPD said the officer has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

    As of Thursday, BPD said all northbound lanes of Route 197 were open.
