CHARLES COUNTY Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Charles County Sherriff’s Office (CCSO) said a person was injured after a deputy was involved in a shooting on Thursday afternoon.

In a post on X around 11:50 a.m., deputies responded to the 14700 block of Bassford Road in Hughesville for a shooting that involved a deputy.

CCSO said the suspect there was inside a home. He had active arrest warrants for his involvement in a violent assault and for stabbing his elderly relative’s caregiver.

Preliminary, CCSO said 28-year-old Patrick Roberts, Jr. was inside a house when deputies started creating a perimeter around it.

Roberts came out of the house with a large knife and then ran into a wooded area. A K-9 was sent after him off leash and when the K-9 tried to apprehend Roberts, he “enraged” the K-9.

That’s when the K-9 officer took out his gun and shot Roberts in the stomach.

Roberts was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The K-9 was also checked out and was not hurt.

The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, per the sheriff’s office’s policy.
