ARLINGTON, Va. ( DC News Now ) — The Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) is giving all pet owners with children some back-to-school tips that may help with their four-legged furry friends.

As students are heading back to school, that means new routines are going to be introduced for the entire family. That means some of our furry friends are left to grapple with the changes which can include a sudden decrease in attention and activity, AWLA said.

Here are some tips that AWLA provided to help ease pets into the new routine:

    • Ease into a new schedule: Gently introduce your pets to a new schedule and have your pets get a taste of quieter days.
    • Check your surroundings: If you let your pets into the yard, check to make sure the backyard is pet-safe. Check for loose panels in the face or if the doggie door is functioning properly.
    • Keep up a routine: Pets are also creatures of routine! Establish a schedule for meal times, walks and playtime.
    • What to do during school bus times: If you drive your children to school, leave your pets at home and consider crating them so they don’t get into any funny business while you’re gone. If you bring your kids to the bus stop, consider taking Fido along on a leash to tire them out.
    • Keep backpacks and lunchboxes out of reach : Keep pet mishaps from happening by placing lunchboxes and backpacks in a place where Fido can’t reach it. Things like gum and raisins can be dangerous to pets.
    • Guests and visitors to the home: If you’re hosting a playdate for your kids, let guests know how to interact with your pets and keep an eye on the pets. Some pets like their quiet time and need a break from the festivities.
    • Exercise and stimulation: Give Fido something to do when you’re not home. Consider giving them low-calorie treats or interactive toys.

As the back-to-school season rolls around, don’t forget to give your pets some quality time, whether or not that be snuggling on the couch or bringing them along on morning runs.
