CHARLES COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Maryland State Police (MSP) are investigating after a 20-year-old man died in a motorcycle crash in Hughesville early Sunday morning.

According to MSP, at around 2:40 a.m., troopers from the MSP La Plata barrack responded to Maryland Route 5 south of Old Leonardtown Road for a report of a “serious motor vehicle collision.”

MSP said that the preliminary investigation indicates that Connor McCarthy, 20, of Mechanicsville, was driving an unregistered 2008 Suzuki GSXR-750 southbound at a high speed when he failed to navigate a curve in the roadway and lost control of the bike.

McCarthy and the Suzuki then collided with a guardrail, according to MSP.

    He died at the scene.

MSP said that speed, alcohol and “driver error” appear to be the factors in the crash.

Police encourage anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at (301) 392-1200.

    The investigation is ongoing.
