WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm near former president Donald Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while Trump was golfing on Sunday.

Former president Trump says he is safe and unharmed.

The FBI, which is leading the investigation, has a suspect in custody as they work to figure out why this happened.

The FBI says it arrested a man after Secret Service agents saw an AK-47-style rifle pointing toward Trump through bushes while he was golfing Sunday.

“Probably between three and 500 yards, but with a rifle in the scope like that. That’s not a long distance,” said Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

Law enforcement says a witness reported the suspect’s license plate number to police and within minutes, the FBI took Ryan Wesley Routh into custody in a neighboring county.

Officials say the suspect left a rifle with a scope, two backpacks and a go-pro at Trump’s golf club.

“The Secret Service agent that was on the course did a fantastic job. What they do is they have an agent that jumps one hole ahead of time to where the president was at,” said Bradshaw.

Trump’s opponent in the 2024 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris said, “I’m glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”

Trump is scheduled to speak about cryptocurrency from Florida live on the social media platform “X” Monday night.
