WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Bismah Ahmed grew up in Virginia said she is proud of her roots in the Commonwealth as a lobbyist and an advocate.

Ahmed wanted to become an English teacher, but she got bit by the political bug after interning for a Virginia delegate.

“I had this internship, and I actually fell in love with it,” Ahmed said. “I was sitting in committees listening to bill hearings, and I knew I wasn’t going to pursue teaching.”

Ahmed became a lobbyist, where she spends a lot of her time in Richmond and on Capitol Hill, advocating for many issues including affordable housing.

While away from work, she advocates for women who have been abused and are trying to start their lives over, and she is a big supporter of immigrant and refugee families trying to get adjusted in the DMV and around the country

“It is a big problem getting families assimilated to a new country,” Ahmed said. “There are many hurdles they deal with including a language barrier.”

Ahmed spends a lot of time away from work, raising awareness for other causes, and moving forward, she plans to continue to fight for the rights of others who are not as fortunate.
