CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — It is probably the most dreaded and despised tax in West Virginia, but new relief is on the way. It’s all about refunding your annual personal property tax.

For years West Virginians complained about having to pay personal property taxes on their vehicles. Many consider it double taxation since you paid sales tax on the vehicle’s purchase price.

    Now it will all change.

You will still have to pay at least half the property tax by Sept. 30, and the other half by the end of March. However, any taxes paid in 2024 will be fully refunded on your 2025 tax return. Supporters say it will stimulate spending.

“We really think it will fuel the economy. It will give people some money in their pockets. And there’s a lot of needs out there. Inflation has been very difficult for our taxpayers, for our citizens. So, I really think it’s going to help with grocery bills, feeding kids, and clothing children,” said Larry Pack, WV Secretary of Revenue.

The tax isn’t just for cars. It includes all licensed vehicles such as pick-up trucks, motorcycles, trailers and farm equipment.

It’s estimated the tax refunds will pump more than $100 million into the West Virginia economy.

According to the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, the average vehicle tax in the Mountain State is $220 per year, but it can be a lot more depending on a car’s value.

Another form of taxation relief with loopholes. We shouldn’t be paying this in the first place. Ask the people in OHIO if they pay this poverty justifying tax.
