Drivers to pay fines for speeding in Arlington school zones

ARLINGTON COUNTY, Va. ( DC News Now ) — Speeding near some Arlington County public schools could cost drivers $100.

Fines started Wednesday after the Arlington County Police Department installed 10 cameras in selected school zones last month to catch violators.

“We got to keep the kids safe. We got to keep ourselves safe,” said Jennifer Trahant, who has two children at Ashlawn Elementary School.

Before Wednesday, violators only got a warning. The cameras are only active when lights flash, warning drivers what the speed limit is while they are in those school zones.

“A lot of crazy driving on this street so when they put in the school zone and the camera…it’s safe for the pedestrian and all residents in Arlington County,” said Sancyan Brua, another parent.

Police said they’re still processing how many drivers the cameras caught during the trial period. However, as of Sept. 23, the latest date available, warnings went out to just over 1,820 drivers.
