WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Sunday, Sept. 29 is World Heart Day ! Each year, the day raises awareness about heart health and shines the light on ways to prevent cardiovascular diseases, also known as CVD.

This year’s theme is, “Use Heart For Action.”

According to the World Health Organization , CVD is the leading cause of death taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year.

Tips to maintain a healthy heart

Dr. Jared A. Spitz , who works with Inova Health System in Virginia, told DC News Now that heart disease is common in both men and women.

“Unfortunately it’s underdiagnosed and undertreated in women, so we see a lot of complications in women much more than we necessarily need to,” said Dr. Spitz.

Spitz said high blood pressure during pregnancy and gestational diabetes are risk factors for heart disease and strokes. He added women with a history of pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes or other heart-related pregnancy complications.

Blood test may detect heart disease risk in women decades earlier

“Absolutely need to talk to a doctor or see a cardiologist comfortable in taking care of women with these conditions,” explained Dr. Spitz.

He said staying physically active, having a healthy diet, and controlling tobacco and alcohol use can keep your heart healthy.
