VIRGINIA ( DC News Now ) — President Joe Biden has approved Virginia’s request for an emergency declaration, making federal assistance available to several Southwest Virginia counties after Hurricane Helene caused damage across the area.

Biden approved the request from Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin on Sunday.

The approval authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate disaster relief efforts and to provide further assistance in Grayson, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe counties.

The City of Galax is also included.

“After joint preliminary damage assessments, Giles County, Pulaski County, and other additional localities are expected to be added and we are working through the FEMA process to get all impacted localities included,” said the Office of the Governor, in part, in a release on Sunday .

Youngkin visited Grayson, Va., on Sunday to assess the storm damage caused by Hurricane Helene.

Today, I visited some of the impacted counties to reiterate that we are praying for all affected Virginians and we’re working to restore power, communications, water, and cell phone coverage immediately. State and local officials are coordinating to ensure that key essentials such as water and food are available to those that need it. As we begin the recovery process, Virginians in need can go to VAemergency.gov or dial 211 for help. At the state and local level, we will remain continually engaged to ensure Virginians get the support and help that they need in the aftermath of this powerful storm. I am proud of Virginia first responders for their assistance, the grit and resilience of Virginians and together, we will get through this.”
