ALEXANDRIA, Va. ( DC News Now ) — The Alexandria Police Department (APD) announced that people who live in the Old Town community can expect to see an increase in police officers.

This comes after five people were shot, including a 25-year-old man who was killed on Wythe Street over the last two weeks.

On Sept. 19 , Kwakia Frazier, 25, died in a shooting in the 1300 block of Wythe Street that left two other people hurt, including a 15-year-old boy. Just days later, on Sept. 28 , two teenage boys were shot while sitting in a car in the 1100 block of Wythe Street.

Alexandria elementary school remains closed due to potential lead exposure concerns

APD said detectives are continuing to pursue leads, review hours of video footage, analyze evidence and interview witnesses in both shootings. Officers are also working closely with the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority (ARHA) to take proactive steps to provide public safety.

As the investigation continues, APD said it will also implement the following safety measures in and around the neighborhood:

    • Increase daily patrol units
    • Continuing collaboration with ARHA to strengthen and support existing security measures
    • Leveraging existing technology on the ARHA property and in surrounding areas
    • Enhancing community engagement among residents to address ongoing concerns
    • Assigning a neighborhood resource officer dedicated to connecting directly with the community to resolve concerns.

In partnership with stakeholders, the City of Alexandria and the ARHA, officers are meeting with the surrounding civic organizations and residents to continue to provide support and improve public safety.

Police encourage the community to report suspicious activity to the APD non-emergency number at 703-746-4444.
