CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — West Virginia’s three-day special session of the legislature is over. Whether the session was a success, or not, depends on who you ask. More than 120 lawmakers arrived in Charleston Sunday evening and most were gone by late Tuesday night.

Over the three days, lawmakers passed 37 bills. The governor says various tax cuts and credits will pump more than $50 million into the state’s economy. The highlights include another 2% cut in the state’s personal income tax, millions of dollars in supplemental appropriations for issues such as education, corrections, and drought relief, and West Virginia’s first-ever tax credits for families paying for childcare.

“This is a, it’s good first step. But the childcare task ahead of us is incredibly complicated. And it’s a challenge nationwide,” said State Sen. Eric Tarr, (R) Putnam – Finance Chairman.

“The bill to address the childcare crisis in this state, what was passed, it just barely scratches the surface of addressing this crisis. It might pay for about one week of childcare,” said Del. Mike Pushkin, (D) Kanawha & State Party Chairman.

“We celebrate that we absolutely – didn’t do as much as I wanted to do in regard to childcare – but we did something,” said Gov. Jim Justice, (R) West Virginia.

With the state’s income tax being cut by more than 27% in the past two years, the governor believes that will attract many out-of-state workers to new businesses here, including Nucor Steel, Berkshire Hathaway and Form Energy.

The 37 bills that passed now go through the enrollment process, which could take several days. As of now, we do not know when Governor Justice will sign the bills into law.
