MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — As the season changes and the temperature drops, Montgomery County firefighters are warning the community about using space heaters.

This comes after the Montgomery County Fire and Services were called to a house fire early Wednesday morning.

In a post on the X platform around 1 a.m., Pete Piringer a spokesperson with the fire department, said crews were called to the 12600 block of Prices Distillery Road, near Lewisdale Road for a fire.

There, crews found flames in the bedroom of a single-family home. Piringer said the person was able to escape the room and was not hurt.

During the investigation, officials determined the fire was caused by a space heater that was too close to a blanket.

The fire department said when using a space heater, always plug it directly into a wall outlet. Officials said extension cords or power strips can not handle the high current flow that a space heater generates.

This can cause the cords to overheat and cause a fire.
