RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) announced the creation of Virginia’s new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force on Wednesday.

This task force will include 10 of “the most prominent AI experts in the Commonwealth, drawn from Virginia educational institutions, nonprofits and private corporations,” according to an Oct. 16 release from Youngkin’s office.

The AI Task Force was called for under Executive Order 30 , which Youngkin issued in January.

“When I signed my artificial intelligence executive order, I was very clear that while there are amazing opportunities with AI, there are also inherent risks that we must tackle head-on. I am excited to bring together this extraordinary group of leading experts in the AI space,” Youngkin said in the release.

At least twice a year, the AI Task Force will meet and make recommendations to both Virginia’s executive and legislative branches on “Policy Standards,” “IT Standards” and “Education Guidelines,” as described in the executive order. This will also involve evaluating both existing and proposed AI uses by state agencies.

“The Task Force’s input will help the Commonwealth ensure that its AI policy remains up-to-date and responds to new developments in this rapidly developing space,” Youngkin’s office said. “By positioning itself as a leader in this critical new industry, Virginia is building on its status as America’s top state for business and enhancing the lives of its citizens.”
