WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — D.C. U.S. Rep. Oye Owolewa said he is recovering after being hit by a car on Oct. 4 in Southeast D.C., according to a press release.

Owolewa said he was on his way home when he was involved in a car crash on Alabama Ave. that left him with a concussion as well as a neck and back sprain.

13 new early voting locations added across Fairfax County

After a week of being hospitalized, rest and physical therapy, Owolewa is returning to work as D.C.’s representative.

Owolewa said that being in the car crash made him want to push more efforts toward traffic safety in the Congress Heights neighborhood.

“Rep Oye is looking at all options to improve local safety in Southeast DC, where half of DC’s traffic deaths occur. He’s calling for equity in traffic safety measures to replicate what he sees in other places in DC. Such measures include green light turn signals and turn restrictions on Alabama Ave. Ward 8 should no longer be DC’s most dangerous place to drive,” a news release stated.
