CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. ( DC News Now ) — Jefferson County, in West Virginia’s eastern panhandle, experienced tremendous upheaval from the Civil War in and around Charles Town.

On Saturday at 11:30 a.m. the Jefferson County Museum will be hosting a Civil War retrospective at the Carriage Inn on East Washington Street.

It is being held at the exact location where Generals Grant and Sheridan met to plot the Shenandoah Valley campaign in 1864.

“Our courthouse was destroyed during the Civil War,” Lori Wysong, Director of the Jefferson County Museum, said. “A lot of other city buildings as well. Union troops were hiding in there so Confederate troops shelled it. The Civil War gets talked about a lot but not always in a local context.”
