    WVU rifle collects first GARC win in home opener

    The No. 2 West Virginia University rifle team collected its fourth win of the season and the first in the Great America Rifle Conference with a 4733-4699 win over No. 13 Memphis on Saturday inside the WVU Shell Building.

    The win runs the Mountaineers’ regular season win streak up to 17 matches.

    West Virginia claimed smallbore and air rifle with marks of 2352-2121 and 2381-2378, respectively. WVU is now 18-2 all-time against Memphis.

    For smallbore and air rifle, sophomores Griffin Lake and Lauri Syrja and freshmen Ashlyn Blake and Camryn Camp served as counters for the match. Freshman Jacob Wisman counted for smallbore while senior Natalie Perrin counted in air rifle.

    Lake collected a new career-best aggregate total of 1189 to take first place overall. He fired a 592 smallbore, the highest mark in the match, followed by a 597 in air rifle. His score in air rifle tied for second.

    Blake finished just behind in second with an 1185 with a 589 in smallbore and a 596 in air rifle. Syrja claimed third place with his 1182. He scored a 590 in smallbore and a 592 for air rifle.

    Wisman posted a career mark in air rifle with a 597. He added a score of 581 in smallbore to total 1178 and a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Maximus Duncan hit career highs in aggregate (1178), smallbore (583) and air rifle (595) to earn sixth place.

    Camp scored an 1173 (580 SB – 593 AR) while Perrin scored a 595 after only competing in air rifle.

    Next up, WVU is set to host Mount Aloysius on Saturday, Oct. 26, at noon ET from the WVU Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
