    Deputies: New Mexico man arrested in Stafford County for alleged DUI, drug trafficking

    STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. ( DC News Now ) — The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said a man from New Mexico was arrested after he was accused of driving intoxicated and much more Wednesday.

    SCSO said on Oct. 16, just after 5 p.m. a caller reported the man for reckless driving in the Richmond Highway and Eskimo Road area.

    The caller said the man was driving an RV and was “failing to maintain the lane of travel while traveling about 28 MPH in a 40 MPH zone.”

    They also reported the man being slumped over the wheel while driving.

    Deputies found the “large vehicle” in the Richmond Highway and Courthouse Road area where they observed the RV swerving around and the driver slumped over the wheel.

    Deputies conducted a traffic stop at the Stafford School Board Building and identified the driver as Samuel Harris, 35.

    While deputies spoke with him, they noticed signs of impairment which Harris said it was because he was “overwhelmed.”

    Deputies conducted a field sobriety test on him and he was detained shortly afterwards.

    Harris’ RV needed to be towed so deputies conducted an inventory search and found five guns. numerous controlled substances including fentanyl, multiple drug paraphernalia items and a journal of names with money amounts written which deputies believe is connected to recent drug transactions.

    Harris was charged with the following:

    • Driving under the influence
    • Refusal
    • Five counts of possession of controlled substances
    • Five counts of possession of a firearm while in possession of controlled substances
    • Five counts of possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute
    • Five counts of drug trafficking
    • Traffic lane violation
