Matt Reeves On Plans To Do ‘The Batman’ Trilogy: “It’s Sticking Very Closely To The Path We Envisioned”

Matt Reeves is reassuring DC fans that the plan for The Batman with Robert Pattinson in the titled role was envisioned as a trilogy.

The filmmaker said that Batman II and the HBO series The Penguin are all part of his vision for the Batman universe he created.

“Yes, that is still the plan,” Reeves told Collider about making The Batman trilogy. “I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.”

Reeves made the statement while promoting the spinoff series The Penguin , a character played by Colin Farrell introduced in the 2022 film.

“Things kind of shifted. So, when we came up with the idea to do The Penguin , that was something where I had always intended to continue Penguin’s story, and wanted to tell this story of his beginning of rise to power,” Reeves said. “Because we know that he’s introduced in The Batman as a kind of mid-level, sort of overlooked, mocked figure, who’s not yet in anyone’s eyes the kingpin we come to know him as in the lore.”

He continued, “And so, that was deliberate because I wanted— whereas it wasn’t Batman’s origin story, I wanted the origin stories of these other characters, of the Rogues Gallery and that story was originally going to be the entrée into the next movie.”

Reeves has previously given insight into The Batman II , telling SFX magazine he plans “to shoot next year,” as they were “finishing up the script now.”

“Colin [Farrell] will be part of the movie. We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC and the studio and they’re super excited,” he added.

Reeves noted that The Penguin, which stars Farrell as the Gotham City villain, is the “entry point” to the Batman sequel and it’s “absolutely connected to where we leave things in the series.”
