Emmy Arrivals Delayed By Pro-Gaza Protestors Near Red Carpet

Emmy Awards attendees today found their arrival at the Peacock Theatre held up by protesters in downtown LA.

Similar to the Oscars earlier this year and Joe Biden and Barack Obama’s June 15 double bill fundraiser, pro-Gaza protestors took to the streets before TV’s big night. Waving flags and shouting chants, approximately 35 protestors were gathered at S Figueroa and W 18 th Street down the road from the LA Live complex where Sunday’s 76 th Primetime Emmys are taking place. A number of the protestors were on the street itself, blocking traffic.

“No justifying the murder of children,” read a sign one protestor was holding, referring to Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza since the brutal October 7 attack on the Jewish state that saw thousands killed, raped, maimed and hundreds taken hostage.

While several blocks from the Peacock Theatre, the intersection is important because it is where a lot of Emmy participants’ vehicles exit both the Harbor Freeway heading north and the Santa Monica Freeway. Reminiscent of the situation surrounding the Academy Awards on March 10, numerous sources tell us they were hindered getting to the Emmys, which formally begins at 5 p.m. PT.

On the record, an LAPD spokesperson had no comment on the protestors when contacted by Deadline this afternoon. However, a law enforcement source told us that police and other agencies “anticipate a number of scenarios, and this will not delay tonight’s ceremony.”

To that, police were on the scene in the last 30 minutes making sure Emmy attendees passed the protestors smoothly.

We reached out to TV Academy organizers about any impact the protests could have on the start time of tonight’s show. We will update if and when we hear from them.

Hosted by past Emmy winners Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, the second Emmy Awards of 2024 is being broadcast live on ABC starting at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
