UPDATED with two more shows postponed: Usher revealed Thursday that a neck injury suffered earlier this week during rehearsals for the start of his “Past, Present, Future” world tour is the reason he had to postpone its opening night Wednesday in his hometown of Atlanta.

He also said today that he has to reschedule Friday and Saturday’s show’s at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena as he continues to heal. The new dates are set for December 9-10 and December 12.

“My hope was that with physical therapy and medical treatment, I would be able to overcome the injury and be ready for opening night,” he wrote today on Instagram of his tour kickoff. “Unfortunately, the injury has not healed yet, and my doctors have instructed me not to perform any shows this week.”

He added that “the good news” is doctors told him with “appropriate rest and treatment” he will be able to jump back into the tour schedule beginning Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

PREVIOUSLY, August 14 PM: Usher, who was scheduled to kick off his Past, Present, Future world tour on Monday night in his hometown of Atlanta, has postponed the concert to a later date, saying he needed to give his “body a second to rest and heal.”

For now, his other two Atlanta shows are still scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday at State Farm Arena before the tour moves on to Washington, D.C. The North American leg is set to run through November 30 before the tour resumes in the UK and Europe at the end of March.

Usher didn’t explain why he needed to “rest and heal,” but told fans less than 12 hours out from showtime that he had to reschedule.

“For my 30-plus year career, 100% of my blood, sweat and tears has gone to putting on the best performance and creating a memorable experience for my fans,” he wrote. “I have every intention of doing that for this tour as well which is why I have to postpone tonight’s show… .

“The last thing I want to ever do is disappoint you, the fans who have been eagerly waiting for this tour to start. However, I wouldn’t be the entertainer that I am if I can’t physically give you my best.”

The concert tour for the eight-time Grammy winning performer comes amid a busy stretch that included being the headliner for this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show , which came two days after the release of his ninth studio album, Coming Home . In March, he won Entertainer of the Year at the BET Awards. That came after he wrapped a 100-date residency at Las Vegas’ Park MGM in December.

Upcoming, the concert film Usher: Rendezvous in Paris is scheduled to hit theaters September 12 for a limited four-day weekend global run at 2,000 cinemas worldwide (1,000 theaters in the U.S.).
