EXCLUSIVE : A strong cast of actors, financiers and producers has come together for Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value , the follow-up to his critical and commercial hit The Worst Person in the World , which was Oscar nominated and took more than $12 million at the global box office.
Neon Takes North American Rights To Joachim Trier’s ‘Sentimental Value’ Starring Renate Reinsve — Cannes
That film’s breakout star Renate Reinsve is back to play the lead in Sentimental Value , as previously reported, and we can reveal that she will be joined by Stellan Skarsgård ( Dune ), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas ( A Beautiful Life ) and Elle Fanning ( The Great ).
Production has begun in Oslo on Trier’s anticipated sixth feature. It will film in Norway’s capital through November, with additional shoots in France, before launching in 2025. Refreshingly, the comedy-drama keeps Trier in his native Norwegian language.
The film will be fully expected by many to launch in Cannes competition in 2025. The Worst Person in the World had its world premiere in 2021 at Cannes, where Reinsve won Best Actress.
Sentimental Value is a portrait of a family in Oslo, the house they’ve lived in for generations, and of how the past has a way of resurfacing in unexpected ways.
Reinsve, fresh off her Apple series Presumed Innocent and A24’s A Different Man , re-teams with Trier for the lead role. The plot follows an acclaimed stage actress, Nora (Reinsve), and her younger sister Agnes (Lilleaas) as their eccentric and charismatic father, Gustav (Skarsgård), suddenly steps back into their lives after a long absence. Once a renowned film director, Gustav looks to make his comeback and make amends with Nora by offering her the lead role in his next film. But Nora wants nothing to do with her father or his film.
The film is described as “an intimate, poignant and often funny exploration of family, memories, and the reconciliatory power of art.” Fanning will portray an American movie star who comes to Oslo.
Trier is one of the Nordic’s leading filmmakers. After its Cannes premiere, The Worst Person in the World went on to garner two Oscar nominations, for Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay. It also scored BAFTA, Goya, César and European Film Awards nominations.

With Sentimental Value , Trier continues his screenwriting collaboration with Eskil Vogt, which includes all of Trier’s features.

Rising Norwegian actress Lilleaas previously starred in Women In Oversized Men’s Shirts , the TV series Young & Promising , and the recent Scandi Netflix film A Beautiful Life .
Skarsgård, one of the Nordic region’s biggest international film stars, is coming off blockbuster franchise Dune and Star Wars series Andor . Fanning will next be seen in Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown and is filming Badlands for 20 th Century Studios.
In addition to The Worst Person in the World , Trier previously directed the films Reprise (2006), Oslo, August 31st (2011), Louder Than Bombs (2015) and Thelma (2017).
