CBS Mornings plans to add a third hour, with the expectation that it will debut by the end of next month.

Executive producer Shawna Thomas wrote in a memo to staffers that the third hour is being developed for CBS-owned stations, with a simulcast on the streaming channel CBS News 24/7.

“Now, it won’t look or feel exactly like the first two hours. Yes, the talent will be a little different and the name will be a little different, but it will still be the smart and engaging content everyone expects from the CBS Mornings family,” Thomas wrote in the memo.

CBS’ revamped morning show debuted in 2021, and features Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil, Nate Burleson and Vladimir Duthiers. CBS Mornings is the latest morning show to expand beyond the traditional two-hour, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. slot. NBC’s Today expanded to three hours in 2000, and later added a fourth. ABC’s Good Morning America added GMA3 in 2018.

Thomas wrote, “The expansion of CBS Mornings shows a commitment to the brand and the idea that there is a possibility of some growth at a challenging time. So, let’s do this together and make another hour of tv/digital video/content we can be proud of.”
