BBC Presenter Lauren Laverne Reveals Cancer Diagnosis

BBC presenter and DJ Lauren Laverne has received a cancer diagnosis, she has revealed.

In an Instagram post, the Desert Island Discs host said the cancer had recently been detected during a screening test but was “caught early” and the she is expected to take a full recovery.

She thanked the medical teams who had “got me this far with incredible skill and kindness,” her friends and family, who have been “absolutely extraordinary every step of the way” and the teams at her agent, Independent Talent Group, radio station BBC 6 Music, BBC magazine series The One Show and Desert Island Discs , the influential music show she has hosted since 2018.

She urged people who are “avoiding a test or putting off an appointment” to get checked, noting that “finding out asap is everything.”

“It’s usually my job to bring good vibes on air but any have to spare are very much welcome here,” she added.

Laverne was the lead singer in the 1990s British band Kenickie before moving into TV presenting for the likes of Channel 4, Sky and the BBC and landing radio gigs on BBC 6 Music and XFM. She has presented the breakfast show on BBC 6 Music since 2019, having been named the fifth host of long-running music series Desert Island Discs the year before.

She was the co-host of kids show CD:UK on ITV and later became a regular presenter on The Culture Show on the BBC. She also co-hosted Channel 4’s Alternative Election Night in 2010 and joined the cast of satirical series 10 O’Clock Live a year later. She narrates animated kids show Tee and Moe and has been a presenter on magazine series The One Show since last year.
