In what will be his first feature project after directing his near $100 million-plus Western saga Horizon, Kevin Costner is set to star and co-write the tropical surf thriller Headhunters, which will be the feature directorial debut of Missing DP Steven Holleran.

Costner’s Territory Pictures will produce with Scott Steindorff of Stone Village Films.

Costner will play a washed-up American expat with a mysterious past who winds up living in Bali, Indonesia. He gathers a group of surfers led by a local photographer to find the perfect wave at an uncharted island — which winds up being the domicile of an ancient tribe of headhunters who are protecting their land at all costs.

Station Eleven star Daniel Zovatto is also starring in Headhunters . He previously worked with Steindorff, who executive produced that HBO limited series.

Headhunters is also produced Howard Kaplan, Costner’s partner at Territory Pictures, as well as Stone Village’s Dylan Russell, Lindsay Davis and Stacey Woods.

Costner’s passion project Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1 made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and went on to gross $38.2M at the global box office. Part 2 made its world premiere at Venice. The sequel was pulled from the August theatrical release calendar by Warner Bros.

Costner told the press about the future of Horizon at Venice: “I don’t know how I’m gonna make [Part 3] right now, but I’m gonna make it.” He told Deadline that the first three movies cost him $98M, and when he does a fourth Horizon, “it will push me over $100 million.”

I didn't see that coming! But it's a good idea to jump into a new movie right now, get your mind off of the stuff running around and around. You know the saying, what doesn't kill ya, makes you stronger in the end. see ya at the movies
