Suffs , the double-Tony Award winning Broadway musical by Shaina Taub that counts Hillary Rodham Clinton among its producers, will close January 5, 2025, producers announced today.

The well-reviewed musical about the suffragist movement began previews at the Music Box Theatre on March 26, with an official opening on April 18. When it closes, it will have played 24 previews and 301 regular performances.

A national tour will launch at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre in September 2025, with additional cities to be announced in the coming months.

Though the musical did solid business throughout most of the summer – and scored six Tony nominations (including Best Musical), winning two (Taub’s book and score) – business had been dropping. For the week ending October 6, attendance was at just 78% of the Music Box’s capacity. The weekly gross that week was $679,589, the lowest take since a summer high of $942,785 for the week ending June 23.

Produced by Clinton, Malala Yousafzai, Jill Furman, and Rachel Sussman, Suffs is directed by Leigh Silverman, with choreography by Mayte Natalio. The musical tells the real-life stories of Alice Paul, Carrie Chapman Catt, Ida B. Wells and other suffragists who fought for the passage of the constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote.

“Bringing the story of the suffs to the stage has been an honor and we are deeply grateful to our cast and company,” said producers Furman and Sussman. “Watching audiences encounter the inspiring women of Suffs , many of whom they had never heard of before, has been extremely profound, especially in this election season. We are thrilled to have played a part in giving new life to the suffragists’ fight for the vote through Shaina Taub’s award-winning book and score and look forward to sharing it with audiences across the country.”

The original Broadway cast includes Taub, Nikki M. James, Jenn Colella, Grace McLean, Hannah Cruz, Kim Blanck, Anastacia McCleskey, Ally Bonino, Tsilala Brock, Nadia Dandashi and Emily Skinner.

Suffs , which premiered Off Broadway at the Public Theater in April 2022, made history of its own when it opened on Broadway, with Taub becoming only the second woman in history to write the book, music, lyrics and star in her own Broadway musical. (The first was Micki Grant in 1972 with Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope .)
