Netflix faces a dilemma over whether to proceed with Building the Band , what was likely Liam Payne’s last major television project before his death this week.

The streaming giant greenlit the music competition series in May, and Deadline understands that filming has wrapped on the show, which was produced by UK outfit Remarkable Entertainment.

Netflix will likely wish to move forward sensitively after Payne’s loved ones expressed their distress following the events of Wednesday, when he fell from his hotel balcony in Argentina.

It is not clear when Netflix was planning to premiere Building the Band , but most series for the streamer are in post-production for around three to six months. Netflix and Banijay-owned Remarkable declined comment.

Building the Band involved bringing together 50 singers to compete for a chance to form their own band without seeing each other. They had to connect via musical compatibility and chemistry before finally meeting.

Former One Direction singer Payne served as a mentor alongside Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland, who was part of Destiny’s Child. Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean was on hosting duties.

The series culminated in three live shows that were filmed in late August in front of an audience at Aviva Studios in Manchester. Payne’s fans flocked to watch the recording, with some posting on social media about meeting the singer.

One fan revealed that Building the Band audience members serenaded Payne with a rendition of “Happy Birthday” after he turned 31 the day before the final recording.

Rowland reflected positively on her experience working with the One Direction star, telling People : “Liam is absolutely hilarious. I didn’t know how funny he was, so I’m getting to know him, and he is so cool.”

Building the Band was executive produced by Cat Lawson, Alison Holloway, Katrina Morrison, Clara Elliot and Simon Crossley.
