At Marietta National Cemetery in Georgia, the 79th annual Memorial Day event will begin at noon. Each year, crowds from several hundred to several thousand people gather at the cemetery to pay their respects on the holiday dedicated to remembering.

To help personalize this celebrated holiday begotten of tragedy, we've written a series of Newsbreak articles about some of the heroes buried in the hills at Marietta National Cemetery. Published over the past several weeks, here's a list (and a single link for access to all) of all the profiles we wrote to remember some of those who died to protect our freedom:

Marine Corporal Lee Hugh Phillips, Medal of Honor recipient, killed in action, November 27, 1957.

Private Dennis B. Buckley, Medal of Honor recipient, died a hero in the Battle of Peach Tree Creek near Atlanta on July 20, 1864.

Crew of B-17E, 41-2566, six-man crew killed in midair collision training for World War II, April 29, 1942.

Emma Stephenson, freed slave turned Army nurse, who gave her life while caring for wounded soldiers, July 16, 1864.

More than 15,000 military veterans and their family members are buried at Marietta National Cemetery.
