DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — To promote trust and solidarity, a local community organization created a family day event that takes place on Saturday at Ingalls Harbor and Pavilion in Decatur.

According to the president of Building Bridges, the lack of faith in leadership in the elected officials in the city of Decatur prompted them to launch the event.

“We have so many instances where the city doesn’t have the support of the government officials,” Adrianna Tapscott-Bridges said.

The event is free and open to the public.

Attendees will have access to health and wellness information, medical screenings, public speakers, voter registration and lots of stuff for children.

Organizers told News 19 that citizens of Decatur and the surrounding areas have suffered greatly due to the lack of accountability after the shooting death of Stephen Perkins in September of 2023.

“We’re just letting everyone know that there are organizations and businesses that do care about the community and community is supposed to have communities back, so that’s what it’s about tomorrow, simply about community,” said Bridges.

Up to 50 local businesses are expected to attend the event which starts at noon on Saturday. You can find more information on the event here.
