Cheers to playing hooky — and looking back on the wild experience years later.

Ted Danson , Woody Harrelson and George Wendt reunited on Wednesday’s (Aug. 14) installment of Sirius XM’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, where they recalled their infamous “hooky day” from set, per Entertainment Weekly .

Wendt, who was a guest on the Danson and Harrelson-led podcast, noted that John — likely referring to John Ratzenberger — “had just bought a boat,” which Danson recalled was “a Boston Whaler.” Then Wendt claimed that John “was anxious to show it off, so [they] cooked up this little getaway.”

Danson recalled he and Harrelson being “already stoned” when they called in sick to set, teasing that “it was clear [they] were playing hooky.” After arriving on the boat, Danson said co-star Kelsey Grammer “immediately had been up all night playing cards, went down to the lower bunk, and fell asleep the whole way.” Meanwhile, Harrelson had asked Danson at the time if he had ever tried mushrooms.

“And I go, ‘No. No, I haven’t.’ And he said, ‘Well, this will be a good time,'” Danson continued. “‘We have nothing to do. We’ll be out on a boat.’ We hadn’t had breakfast, so I was fairly hungry and ate I think an extraordinary amount of mushrooms, and then I’m thinking, ‘Oh, this is all right.'”

Once they were “halfway to Catalina,” Danson said there were “leftover waves from a hurricane in Mexico” and there was “still a huge swell,” so those not on mushrooms would be seasick. However, Danson admitted that he “sat there getting more and more and more freaked out.”

“I look at you, Woody, and you stretched out on a bunk, and I think, ‘Oh, he’s so used to this that he’s just cooling it and relaxing,” Danson shared. “I am panicking. I’m having trouble breathing. I’ll go up top. “

Once Danson met up with Wendt, the latter instantly looked at him and said, ‘”You’re high on something, aren’t you?'” According to Danson’s recollection, Wendt “spent the next 45 minutes poking [him] about every minute or two and said, ‘Breathe.'”

“Because I would literally forget to breathe and feel like I was dying, and then you’d poke me,” he added.

Danson teased that Harrelson came up and had said he was “afraid [he] would jump off the back of the boat.” Meanwhile, to Danson, Harrelson “looked skeletal,” which he referred to as his “only kind of visual buzz” from the mushrooms.

Danson deemed Wendt — who didn’t take any mushrooms but still experienced sea sickness on the trip — their “lifesaver,” and ultimately concluded that he “think[s he’s] ready to do mushrooms again.” However, the three agreed that doing so “in the middle of a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean” might not have been the best move.

“It was the worst four hours of my life,” Danson quipped.
