While Kotb admitted that first dates can be “awkward,” Bush Hager noted that a “great conversation” can really be all you need to make a first date go well.
“And I don’t mean like, ‘What was your last movie you saw?'” Kotb replied. “Ugh, I want, like, real conversation.”
Well, this Today segment certainly did not deliver. The co-hosts looked over a list of first date questions recommended by Cosmopolitan , which included, “What’s something you want to learn?”
Kotb was the first one to speak up after she audibly sighed on the broadcast. “I don’t think that’s a good one because that’s too much pressure, don’t you think? Most people are just barely making it,” she said.
Bush Hager agreed, adding, “No, I know, put me on the spot. I also think people barely make it to work and back… Okay, here’s another one I’m afraid isn’t great: If you could have a superpower what would it be?”
Kotb laughed at the question and jokingly answered, “What would it be? What? To be invisible?”
Bush Hager also appeared to be over the segment as she fired back, “Seriously, time travel? I’d love to go back to two minutes ago before we started this chat.” She and Kotb shared a high-five as they laughed.
But Bush Hager really shut down the next question, which asked, “What are you looking for at the moment?”

“No, y’all! No, no, no! Date one?!” she exclaimed. “If I asked [my husband] Henry Hager what he was looking for at the moment, first of all, it would totally freak him out.”
Kotb pointed out that the point of first dates is to find “commonality” with the other person. But Bush Hager also noted that she could remember the conversations she had with her husband on their very first date — and they certainly didn’t ask each other what superpowers they wished they had.
“We met 20 years ago in September… and he picked me up and I was so nervous, and he was so nervous, his ears were red,” she recalled. “I remember that we talked about his dad who’s now passed and how much he influenced him … I remember that conversation and I’m afraid if you talk about superpowers, that’s forgettable.”
And don’t even think about asking someone if they’re a picky eater.
“I don’t get it! How does that — did a man write these? No offense, no offense!” Bush Hager said.
“Does that mean are you an adventurous eater?” Kotb asked. “It doesn’t matter. That’s such a small thing.” She then pointed out that journalist and model Maria Shriver, a good friend of hers, “eats chicken fingers.”
Bush Hager agreed, adding, “Some of the most adventurous people I know eat like a child. My dad, he’s like, ‘I’ll have a peanut butter and jelly,’ but he’s done cool things!”
