Attention classic horror movie fans: There’s a Rosemary’s Baby prequel movie now streaming on Paramount+ , starring Emmy-winning Ozark actor Julia Garner, called Apartment 7A.

Set just before the events of the infamous 1968 horror movie directed by convicted rapist Roman Polanski, Apartment 7A tells the story of Terry Gionoffrio, a young dancer who becomes addicted to painkillers after an injury, and moves in with a kind elderly couple: Minnie and Roman Castevet.

If you’ve seen Rosemary’s Baby, you know where this is going. You may also remember Terry Gionoffrio as a minor character in the 1968 movie—she was a neighbor who lived in the building where Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes move to. Then, suddenly, she kills herself.

Directed by Natalie Erika James, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Christian White and Skylar James, Apartment 7A imagines a full backstory for Terry Gionoffrio and what led to her suicide. Spoiler alert: It’s shockingly similar to the plot of Rosemary’s Baby. That said, you may find yourself confused by the Apartment 7A ending. Read on for a full breakdown of the Apartment 7A plot summary and the Apartment 7A ending, explained.

    Apartment 7A movie plot summary:

The year is 1965, and Terry Gionoffrio (Julia Garner) is a young dancer trying to hit the big time in New York City. Unfortunately, she severely injures her foot during a show, and never fully recovers. Years pass. Terry tells herself she can still dance, and becomes addicted to painkillers in an attempt to push through her pain.

Terry is nearly out of money, but still determined to make a living as a dancer. She auditions for a show called “The Pale Crook,” written by a composer named Alan Marchand (Jim Sturgess). After a cruel audition, she doesn’t get the part—but she does have a moment of connection with the composer, Marchand.

Terry takes too many painkillers, and follows Marchand to his apartment building, hoping to ask for a second chance. But while speaking to the building doorman, she is overcome with dizzying nausea. She stumbles onto the street, vomits, and is helped by an elderly couple. The couple, Minnie Castevet (Dianne Weist) and Roman Castevet (Kevin McNally), take Terry into their apartment—the same building where Marchand lives. The next morning, Minnie and Roman offer to give Terry a neighboring apartment that they bought “as an investment,” free of charge. They tell her that they like to help struggling, young women. Terry accepts.

Under the guise of helping Terry, Minnie orchestrates a date between Terry and Marchand. Marchand drugs Terry’s drink and, seemingly, rapes her. Terry experiences a bizarre hallucination, including a choreographed dance sequence and a sparkly demon. She has no memory of what happened the next morning. Marchand acts as though they had consensual sex, and then reveals he got Terry a part in his show. Terry, happy to have gotten what she wanted, goes along with it.

Meanwhile, at the apartment building, things are getting weird. At a building Halloween party, Terry notices the other residents taking an unusual interest in her, and also continues to have flashes of hallucinations. Then she finds out that she is pregnant, with what she assumes is Marchand’s baby. The Castevets pressure her to keep the baby, and tell her that they will raise the child if she doesn’t want it. She also finds a hidden passage that connects her apartment to the Castevets, and a book filled with strange, Satanic imagery.

But she also finds her injury magically healed, thanks to a salve from a resident in the building. Then she finds herself the new lead of the show, when the former mean girl lead has a sudden, mysterious fall. Minnie cuts Terry’s hair short to help her fit the part, and coolly informs her she is being ungrateful. After all, she has gotten everything she wanted! We don’t see the scene where Terry meets the new tenant Rosemary Woodhouse in the laundry room—a scene that happens in Rosemary’s Baby —but we can assume it happens somewhere around here.

Terry moves out the apartment and goes to a local church. A nun there tells Terry that the people in her building are Satan-worshipers. When she realizes that Terry is pregnant, she tells Terry they have impregnated her with Satan’s baby—something they’ve tried to do with young women in the past. Terry tries to get an abortion, but the devil baby/Satan attacks the doctor. Terry tells her friend that she is out of options, and that it’s too late to be saved.

Terry returns to the Bramford apartment building. The elevator takes her down to a hidden theater, which somehow gets a lot of natural light despite being underground. She remembers being subjected to a Satanic ritual where she was raped by the devil in that room. She is confronted by Marchand, and kills him with a knife to the gut.

When Terry realizes she’s trapped in the building (the doorman’s in on it, too!) she returns to the eponymous apartment 7A. She faces off with Minnie and Roman, and once again tries to abort the baby, this time by stabbing her own stomach. But Satan’s child won’t let the knife pierce her stomach. Minnie and Roman tell her they will help her raise Satan’s baby together. Terry seems to give up, and accept her role in this Satanic madness.

Minnie and Roman present Terry as the bearer of Satan’s baby to all their Satan-worshiping friends. They all congratulate her, and she seems to go along with it. She performs a wild dance for the worshipers to the tune “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes. Then, for the grand finale, she throws herself out of the apartment window and kills herself. Apparently, Satan wasn’t fast enough to stop her, that time!

In the final scene of the movie, a crowd gathers around Terry’s dead body on the sidewalk. Then, in an after credits scene, we see a police officer at the scene speaking to a blond woman and her husband. Minnie and Roman approach, see the couple, look at each other, and smile. They move toward the couple, and the movie ends. We know that this means this couple will be the next victim of Minnie and Roman’s Satanic escapades… and if you’ve seen Rosemary’s Baby , you’ll no doubt remember a very similar scene from the movie.

Who is the couple in the Apartment 7A end credits scene?

The couple in the Apartment 7A is none other than Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse, the main characters from Rosemary’s Baby. In the original movie, they were played by Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes. In this Apartment 7A prequel film, Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse are played by Amy Neeson and Scott Hume, respectively. If you’ve seen the movie, you know it doesn’t end happily for the Woodhouses, either. Hail Satan?
