After last week’s gripping premiere of Brilliant Minds on NBC, audiences can’t wait to learn more about gifted neurologist Dr. Oliver Wolf ( Zachary Quinto ) and how he’s able to diagnose the most difficult of patients. Nobody knows more about Dr. Wolf’s talents then Bronx General Hospital chief medical officer Dr. Muriel Landon (played by Broadway legend Donna Murphy ). In a wild twist at the end of the show’s pilot, Dr. Landon was revealed to be Dr. Wolf’s mother, which explains some of his hesitancy to take the job at the behest of his friend/colleague, Dr. Carol Pierce ( Tamberla Perry ).

While their dynamic will be explored in future episodes, Dr. Wolf clearly has issues with the way his mother dealt with his deeply troubled, but sweet father in their past. Dr. Wolf may not agree with his mother’s methods, but it is clear she is looking out for him in this exclusive clip from tonight’s all-new episode.

Tamberla Perry Had To Ask Her Husband Who ‘Brilliant Minds’ Star Zachary Quinto Was Before Auditioning: “I Said, ‘No, Spock Is Dead’”

The scene begins with Dr. Landon asking Dr. Wolf for a moment in her office. “Am I in trouble?” asks Dr. Wolf as he takes a seat. Wearily, Dr. Landon begins: “I just wanted to reiterate how happy I am that you’re on the team. There’s no one more devoted to their patients than you and everyone in New York knows that.” Taken aback by her sentiment, Dr. Wolf interrupts. “I’m sensing a but…”

Dr. Landon continues: “Where you get into trouble is with the establishment, your disregard for rules.” Naturally, Dr. Wolf becomes defensive. Nobody likes being called out by their mother! “They only get in the way of what’s best for my patients,” argues Dr. Wolf. “Yeah right,” says Dr. Landon as she grabs a thick manual from her desk and drops it on her son’s lap. “This should help.”

“Please tell me you did not write a memoir,” replies Dr. Wolf wryly. “It’s a manual outlining the protocols for the hospital,” says Dr. Landon. “Sounds riveting,” says Dr. Wolf, rolling his eyes and gets up to leave her office.

Before he gets to the door, Dr. Landon imparts one last motherly observation. “There aren’t many hospitals left in this town that are willing to take a risk on you,” says Dr. Landon plainly. “I may very well be your last chance.” Taking in her words, Dr. Wolf shoots her a look. “Lucky me,” he quips as he turns to leave.

Tune in to NBC tonight at 10/9c to watch an all-new episode of Brilliant Minds.
