The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 8 “Shadow and Flame” ended with the fall of Eregion, the rise of Sauron ( Charlie Vickers ), and the promise of more action still to come. The second season of the Prime Video hit perfectly set the stage for Sauron to finally forge the One Ring, you know, “to rule them all,” but it also offered a roadmap for our heroes to fight back.

**Spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 8 “Shadow and Flame,” now streaming on Prime Video**

In the east, the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) finally assumed his true name as Gandalf and accepted that it is his mission to not only face the Dark Wizard (Ciarán Hinds), but also Sauron himself. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) finally awakened from her battle wounds to discover that the elves of Eregion had camped in a new safe haven with the aid of Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker). Elendil (Lloyd Owen) left Númenor to reconnect with his son in Middle-earth, but was gifted the legendary sword Narsil on his way out. Isildur (Maxim Baldry) has gained the trust of the Southland survivors in Pelargir. Oh, and Durin III (Peter Mullan) died saving Khazad-dûm from the Balrog, leaving his son (and Elrond’s bestie) Durin IV (Owain Arthur) in charge.

So what happens next to Galadriel, Elrond, Gandalf, and all their Middle-earth friends? Well, Tolkien nerds know that soon Sauron will show up in Númenor to work his powers of deception on the likes of Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle) and his King’s Men. The Dark Lord still has to craft his infamous One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom, but eventually Elrond, Isildur, and that “last” alliance of elves and men will come together to defeat Sauron…thereby setting off the chain of events that will eventually lead to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Will There Be a Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 on Prime Video?

Probably! For whatever reason, as of Thursday, October 3, 2024, Amazon has yet to announce that they’ve ordered a third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power . What’s weird about that is that it’s sort of common knowledge that Rings of Power showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are already working on the third season.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 2 Finale Recap: And the Wizard Is…

Payne told The Hollywood Reporter back in August: “All we can say is, we’re working on it. We’re cooking. Let us cook!”

So while we can’t definitively say The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a go, chances are, it is.

When Will The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 Premiere on Prime Video?

Assuming Amazon sticks to its established production schedule for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, fans will likely not get to return to Second Age Middle-earth until sometime around Labor Day 2026. It typically takes around two years for Prime Video to produce one season of The Rings of Power .

What Will Happen in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 finale is actually full of hints and foreshadowing about where the show’s major characters will likely wind up next.

Sauron now has possession of the Nine Rings for Men, the orc army of Mordor, and Fëanor’s hammer. The next time we see him, he’ll probably be using that mythical hammer to craft the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom and/or finding men to corrupt with those Rings of Power.

Rings of Power star Charlie Vickers told Decider last week that while he’s “in the dark about what’s coming next,” he has some sense of what to expect based on Tolkien’s work.

“We’re almost at the height of his power in the Second Age, you know? And then he needs to go on a journey when he goes to Númenor. I don’t know what kind of Sauron gets captured by Pharazôn, but if I’m Pharazôn, I’m not going to be wanting to take this huge evil sorcerer into my prison. So maybe he needs to present as a weakling. I don’t know.”

Speaking of evil sorcerers, we also now know that Gandalf has to defeat the Dark Wizard in Rhûn before confronting Sauron. Elsewhere, Elendil is heading back to Middle-earth to reunite with youngest son Anárion (and still living son Isildur), where the Faithful family will eventually found Gondor. Oh, and that safe haven that the elves have found to lick their wounds after the fall of Eregion is almost certainly the site where Elrond will found Rivendell.

There’s still a lot of story for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to dig into in Season 3, so we’re all just waiting for official word that the third season is a go.
