We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Bad monkey. Good show.

When the end credits roll on Bad Monkey ‘s Season 1 finale on Wednesday, October 9, fans of detective Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) will be left craving more adventures. So have we seen the last of Bill Lawrence’s Carl Hiaasen adaptation? Or will Apple TV+ renew the compelling mystery series for a second season?

Those who watched Bad Monkey Episode 10, “We’re In The Memory-Making Business,” know that Season 1 ended on a bit of a cliffhanger — one which kept the door open for further exploration. Fans of Hiaasen’s novels also know that a second Andrew Yancy story already exists. So a Season 2 does seem within reach…

‘Bad Monkey’ Episode 10 Season Finale Recap: Basically Happy

Ahead of Bad Monkey ‘s final Season 1 episode, Decider chatted with creator Bill Lawrence about his hopes of the future of the series, what a potential Season 2 might look like, and more. Read on for everything we know about Bad Monkey Season 2.

Will There Be A Bad Monkey Season 2 On Apple TV+? Creator Bill Lawrence Weighs In

As of Bad Monkey ‘s Season 1 finale day on Wednesday, October 9, Apple TV+ had yet to cancel or renew the series, but that’s not to say there won’t be a Season 2. It’s not uncommon for streamers to wait a while after a finale premieres to announce a show’s fate, and considering Lawrence’s other Apple TV+ series ( Ted Lasso and Shrinking ) are wildly successful, it’s likely that Bad Monkey will live to see a second season.

Plus, there’s lots more story to tell! Bad Monkey ‘s Season 1 finale ended on a familiar cliffhanger and teed up another potential investigation for Yancy. Since Carl Hiaasen has written a second book in the series, Razor Girl , Lawrence set forth on Season 1 with hopes to make more of the show down the line.

‘Bad Monkey’ Ending Explained: Who Dies, Who Survives, And Who Thrives?

“Vince and I went into this when we sold to Apple saying we’d love to do three. We have a three-season arc in our head, the next book, Razor Girl , we own it,” Lawrence told Decider. “And Carl’s such a good writer. I don’t think he’s — rarely if ever — written sequels to his novels where that character stayed alive. So the only thing that makes me nervous is if we do three seasons, that means I have to make up one on my own. And Carl, he’s a high bar, man.”

Sure he was still technically alone, out of his dream job, and having a drink in his yard while sadly staring out at one heck of a view. But this time, Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly” was playing and the people around him were stronger than ever. Rogellio and his husband were solid. Neville, Dawniee, and Driggs planned to rebuild with the money from Nick’s watch. And even Donald the security guard was moving on up. Yancy had no choice but to believe he was a catalyst, and told Rogellio that no matter how hard he tried, he just kept getting in his own way. To put it in better Bad Monkey terms, Yancy compared himself to key deer, who survive by drinking the sea water when they don’t have access to fresh water: “I’m saying that I’m changing. I don’t have to be the cop of the world. Book’s closed. End of story. Epilogue’s been read.”

Just when you thought we’d leave Yancy off on his key deer comparison, Rogellio put forth a familiar proposition. “I’ve got something in my car. It’s not strictly police business, but I’ve got a feeling something fucked up went down. Wanna take a look for me?” The journey may have changed Yancy and even enticed him to pursue further growth, but at the end of the day, he’s still that same guy who’s going to look in the trunk. So what will Season 2’s investigation look like?

What Will Bad Monkey Season 2 Be About?

Assuming Bad Monkey Season 2 follows Hiaasen’s novel Razor Girl , here’s what you can expect, per the synopsis on the author’s website :

When Lane Coolman’s car is bashed from behind on the road to the Florida Keys, what appears to be an ordinary accident is anything but. Behind the wheel of the other car is Merry Mansfield — the eponymous Razor Girl — and the crash scam is only the beginning of events that spiral crazily out of control while unleashing some of the wildest characters Hiaasen has ever set loose on the page.

There’s Trebeaux, the owner of Sedimental Journeys — a company that steals sand from one beach to restore erosion on another… Dominick “Big Noogie” Aeola, a NYC mafia capo with a taste for tropic-wear… Buck Nance, a Wisconsin accordionist who has rebranded himself as the star of a redneck reality show called Bayou Brethren… a street psycho known as Blister who’s more Buck Nance than Buck could ever be… Brock Richardson, a Miami product-liability lawyer who’s getting dangerously–and deformingly — hooked on the very E.D. product he’s litigating against… and Andrew Yancy — formerly Detective Yancy, busted down to the Key West roach patrol after accosting his then-lover’s husband with a Dust Buster. Yancy believes that if he can singlehandedly solve a high-profile murder, he’ll get his detective badge back.

That the Razor Girl may be the key to Yancy’s future will be as surprising as anything else he encounters along the way–including the giant Gambian rats that are livening up his restaurant inspections.

While we await more updates on Bad Monkey Season 2, Bad Monkey Season 1 is now streaming on Apple TV+.
