Citadel: Diana premiered on Prime Video today, formally expanding Amazon’s Citadel universe like never before. The Italian series takes place in 2030 Milan and the future does not look bright. The northern Italian city’s iconic cathedral has been destroyed by what must obviously have been a horrific act of terrorism and the population lives unhappily under a tense police state. Diana Cavalieri ( Matilda De Angelis ) purports to be a loyal agent of the villainous spy agency, Manticore, but is in fact a double agent for the titular Citadel. However, as far as Diana knows, Citadel was destroyed eight years ago, and she is totally alone in her mission to bring down Manticore from within.

Now, you don’t have to have binged the original Citadel show last spring to follow along with Diana’s thrilling adventures in 2030 Milan. However, if you did catch the Richard Madden / Priyanka Chopra Jonas series, Citadel: Diana ‘s timeline might have you scratching your head.

Decider recently had the opportunity to sit down with three key members of Citadel ‘s brain trust — executive producers Anthony Russo, Angela Russo-Ostot, and David Weil — and we learned exactly when each Citadel show takes place on the grand Citadel timeline.

“There’s a special person in the room whose job is to track this one down,” Anthony Russo said with a grin.

“The timeline master,” Angela Russo-Otstot said, pointing to David Weil. “It’s actually him.”

Will There Be A ‘Citadel’ Season 2? And What is ‘Citadel: Diana’?

“It’s a really good question because we jump so many different times, eight years later, after the fall of Citadel,” David Weil said. “So Citadel (U.S.) takes place just before Diana takes place. And [ Citadel (U.S.)] Season 2 will take place just after the events of Diana .”

“But what’s so interesting is that, you know, the state of the world in Italy, specifically — within such a similar timeline for Diana — feels drastically different,” Russo-Otstot said. “And I think that’s because of the stronghold that our Manticore family there has.”

“So it allowed for a great variety and sort of representation based on which country you’re in, which is an exciting aspect of this endeavor all together.”

Citadel ‘s scope doesn’t just encompass the nations of the United States and Italy. On November 7, 2024 — less than a month from now! — Citadel: Honey Bunny will premiere on Prime Video. That series is split between events that occur in 1992 and 2000 that directly set up the world of Citadel in 2030.

Citadel Timeline Explained: When Does Prime Video’s Citadel Season 1 Take Place?

Citadel Season 1 premiered on April 28, 2023 and features an eight year gap between its opening sequence and the main meat of the series, which follows Kyle Conroy (Richard Madden) and Charlotte Vernon (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) discovering they are actually Citadel agents Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh who lost their memories in the fallout of spy agency’s destruction. Over the course of Citadel Season 1, the two learn to their shock and horror not only what they mean to each other, but how they were involved in Manticore’s victory over Citadel.

Okay, but when did the events of Citadel take place? So, according to Weil, Citadel fell eight years before Citadel: Diana. That means the “Italy mission” that kicks off Citadel Season 1 happened in 2022. Mason and Nadia begin to reclaim their memories in early 2030.

When Will Citadel Season 2 Take Place?

Citadel Season 2 — currently in production in the UK — will take place immediately after the events of Citadel: Diana . So late 2030 or early 2031.

Citadel cast members Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Richard Madden, Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville, and Ashleigh Cummins are all returning. Actors Jack Reynor (The Perfect Couple ), Matt Berry ( What We Do In the Shadows ), and Rahul Kohli ( The Fall of the House of Usher ) are among the new Citadel Season 2 cast.

When Does Citadel: Diana Take Place?

Citadel: Diana mostly takes place in 2030, eight years after the fall of Citadel. That said, there are flashbacks to a younger Diana that explain the circumstances that pulled her into the dangerous life of a double agent.

Because Citadel: Diana takes place in a dystopian future, we not only see the effects that Manticore’s rise to power have had on society writ large, but also the characters’ personal styles. Younger Diana has loose, long hair representing her freedom and innocence, while 2030 Diana sports a sharp, asymmetrical bob that nods to her dual identities.

So will we all be wearing our hair like Fleabag’s sister in six years? Even Citadel: Diana star Matilda De Angelis is skeptical.

“In 2030? No, I don’t think so. I don’t think so,” she said with giggle. “But it was very important for me because I had to portray Diana from the past, which is actually the present, and Diana from the future. So that wig helped me a lot to get into that vibe.”

When Does Citadel: Honey Bunny Take Place?

Citadel: Honey Bunny is the only series in the franchise so far that takes place in the past. The show opens in 2000, in the Northern Indian Himalayan resort town of Nainital. We then jump back to 1992 Mumbai (then called Bombay) to learn how the two main characters, Honey (Samantha) and Bunny (Varun Dhawan) met initially.

Honey and Bunny are actually the parents of Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s Citadel character, Nadia Sinh, and a young version of Nadia (Kashvi Majmundar) appears in the scenes set in 2000. An older version of Bunny, whose real name is Rahi Gambhir (Paul Bazely), appears in Citadel Season 1.
