Things got heated on-air between NBA TV analyst and former basketball star Sam Mitchell and his colleague Chris Miles when the latter made a joke about the former’s salary.

An argument ensued on Friday night, making for one of the most extremely awkward segments on television as of late. You can watch a clip of the blowup below.

Miles had asked Mitchell about Warriors coach Steve Kerr not receiving a gold medal for coaching the USA men’s Olympic team to glory this past summer in Paris.

“I guess it just tells you [in] international [play] how they value coaches – not at all,” quipped Mitchell.

Miles then started to tease Mitchell, who was once a head coach for the Raptors from 2004-08, by saying, “I’m surprised coaches get a paycheck for this show. Maybe you should do this pro-bono, my friend.”

It then became clear that Miles struck a nerve, as Mitchell said his salary was in fact “pretty close” to pro-bono before accusing Miles of “bragging” about his money and threatening to reveal his home address to viewers.

“I’m sorry, did you rent your beach house out down in Florida during the Hurricane?… How about your townhouse in Buckhead, [Georgia]?”

Miles seemed taken aback by Mitchell’s comment and it didn’t end there. Mitchell kept going, accusing him of calling him out and “screaming broke and hungry.”

“I know what you have and where you live young fella, so you need to stop,” he continued.

Miles grinned before accusing Mitchell of being a “snitch,” but Mitchell said he was in fact a “truth teller.”

“You gotta stop messing with me on national TV,” Mitchell went on to say. “… Do I need to give out the address? Because you’re not at home right now.”

After nearly 90 seconds of the heated exchange, Miles finally diverted Mitchell to another topic as they discussed the Blazers-Clippers preseason game being played in Seattle.

But Mitchell wasn’t quite done yet. Minutes later, in another segment, Mitchell actually revealed Miles’ address in Destin, Florida.

“You have the pool put in yet?” asked Mitchell.

Viewers have been reacting to the surprising incident on social media as the clip began to make its rounds.

“Damn, that was personal!,” one said.

“Don’t joke about a man and his money. This probably [not] the first time either,” another added.

“Young fella was asking for it,” added a third.

Mitchell played in the NBA for 13 years, mostly with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he wrapped up his career in the 2001-02 season.

He averaged 8.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game over the course of his career.

The 61-year-old later went on to serve as an assistant coach for the Bucks, Nets, Timberwolves, and Grizzlies. He also served as interim head coach for Minnesota from 2015-16.

Mitchell officially retired from coaching after the 2018-19 season.
