Is Kevin Costner Leaving Yellowstone ?

On June 20, Costner confirmed his permanent exit from Yellowstone in a social media video . The actor later elaborated on his statement during an interview with Extra ‘s Billy Bush , clarifying that he was waiting to receive more info on the fate of his character, but it never came.

“I just hadn’t heard anything about how [John Dutton’s death] would be done,” Costner said. “So it’s time to move on as gracefully as you can with something that’s been very important to you…It was time to move.”

That was in June, but there are never any easy answers when it comes to Yellowstone . Last month, Costner hinted that his story isn’t finished .

“I haven’t seen that dust trail coming toward me, but I’ve always been open to what I started,” the star told Entertainment Tonight . “Five seasons was a lot for us to do, and I think that story is not finished.”

Where exactly does that leave us? When it comes to Yellowstone , anything is possible. In August, rumors swirled that the flagship series could return for a sixth season, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Filming has already wrapped on what’s being referred to as the “series” finale, and Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, and Cole Hauser are talking about the show’s “perfect ending.”

“It was always going to be five seasons in [Sheridan’s] head, but because the show became so successful, the network and everyone wanted more,” Reilly told EW. “So, in a way, fate took it and we ended this part of Yellowstone in a way that he always envisioned it to end.”

Reilly saying that they ended “this part of Yellowstone ” is interesting. Numerous spinoffs of the series are in the works — including a present-day show titled The Madison starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, and Matthew Fox — and from a streaming perspective it makes sense for this iteration of Yellowstone , which streams on Peacock and not Paramount+, to end. Peacock owns the streaming rights to Yellowstone , but any potential new shows, like the rumored but never confirmed Kelly Reilly/Cole Hauser-led spinoff — would most likely stream exclusively on Paramount+.
