One fan asked Oliver, who is the son of Goldie Hawn and brother of Kate Hudson , how she can get her husband to open up emotionally after 20 years together.

“It’s tough because, again, having that vulnerability, being vulnerable is a scary thing,” Oliver told the woman.

“Honestly, there’s nothing that I don’t think you can actually do to open him up after 20 years,” he continued. “He needs to want to do it himself, number one. He needs to see someone to understand why he can’t open up, why vulnerability is so scary to him. I’m speaking from experience.”

Oliver admitted that it was “very hard” for him to “express love” to the women in his life, including his mom, sister and wife.

“I did it through writing because it was safe,” he added. “But if I had to say, ‘You know what? I love you so much and I’m so proud of you and I’m so excited to be in this relationship,’ I would feel like I want to crawl into a hole.”

However, Oliver credited therapy with helping him overcome his emotional blockage.

“I have been in a lot of therapy and have dealt with a lot of stuff to be able to be vulnerable, to be able to express emotion and not be afraid of it,” Oliver said, before advising the audience member to either get her husband into therapy or give him his phone number: “I’ll call him.”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
