ANN ARBOR — On the northeast edge of Ann Arbor, between M-14 and Domino’s Farms, is where the buffalo roam. There, drivers on their daily commute can often catch a glimpse of a herd of 75 bison, grazing across a 90-acre pasture that is part of the Domino’s Farms complex. If they look closely enough, they may also see the beat-up red Ford pickup of Todd Crocker, the herd’s official bison wrangler.
New law makes it easier for Michigan prisons to release people in poor health
DETROIT (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a law Tuesday that would make it easier for people to be released from Michigan prisons if they’re in debilitating health and considered to be a minimal risk to the public. The new law replaces a 2019 law that was seen as vague and hard to apply. Only one person had been released, according to FAMM, an advocacy group that works for changes in criminal justice systems across the country. The Michigan parole board will have authority to release someone to a medical facility, hospice or a home, especially if they have a life expectancy of less than 18 months. “Their needs are too much for the Corrections Department and they’re not a risk to public safety,” said Maria Goellner, director of state policy at FAMM.

Black Trans Women Leaders Share Love, Strength at Detroit Conference
The 28 women who gathered in Detroit from across the country for Black Trans Circles (BTC) came to the leadership conference in early July for education — wisdom gleaned from experts and from listening to one another’s stories. But most of all, they came to the gathering, created in collaboration with the Transgender Law Center, for affirmation and a reminder of their strength as individuals and their collective power when they work together. Black Trans Circles facilitator Jeynce Poindexter, local trans advocate, co-executive director of Trans Sistas of Color Project and Ruth Ellis Center case manager, came to pour love into women who, as she knows firsthand, are frequently decentered, overlooked or targeted by people seeking to harm them.
