Family, friends and fellow police officers gathered in New Hyde Park Saturday to attend the funeral of Emilia Rennhack. The 30-year-old
NYPD officer was among the four people who died after alleged drunk driver Steven Schwally crashed his SUV head on through Hawaii Nail & Spa in Deer Park last Friday. Nine people inside the business were also severely injured in the crash , according to authorities. “She had an infectious smile and a giving spirit,” said Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association. Police say Steven Schwally, 64, was driving at a high rate of speed through a Commack Road parking lot, crossed over Grand Boulevard and then plowed through the salon. Prosecutors said this week that he had 18 beers the evening before the incident. They say he was still drunk when he drove his car into the business. He pleaded not guilty to the one misdemeanor count he is currently facing. “He should have never been behind the wheel of that car. He is behind bars now and he needs to stay behind bars,” added Hendry. An American flag that was draped over Rennhack’s casket was presented to her husband in recognition of her service and sacrifice. “It’s a tragedy and heartbreaking,” explained one mourner who attended today’s funeral service.
