STAA's Kaiden Bailey captures Division 3 Regional title

    2024-05-23

DEERBROOK, Wis. — Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy’s Kaiden Bailey punched his ticket to a fourth straight berth in the WIAA Division 3 Golf Sectionals at Bass Lake Golf Course on Wednesday.

The STAA senior edged Crandon’s Tucker Krause by one stroke to capture the individual Division 3 Regional championship.

Bailey finished the front-nine three strokes ahead of Krause, 36-39, which helped him overcome a lackluster finish after Bailey shot 42 on the back-nine.

Krause carded a 40 on the back end but it wasn’t enough to overcome Bailey’s lead.

Despite Bailey’s first-place finish, the Cavaliers missed the cut for Sectionals as a team after finishing with a combined 381, putting STAA in fifth place.

Only the top four teams advance to Sectionals, while the top four individual golfers on the non-qualifying teams also receive a trip to Sectionals.

Sectionals take place Tuesday at McCauslin Brook Golf Course in Lakewood, Wis. at 9 a.m.

Three Lakes/Phelps breezed to the team Regional title with 351, more than 25 strokes ahead of Coleman, who took second place with 378, one stroke better than third-place Crandon (379).

Wabeno/Laona nabbed the final Sectional spot with a 380, good for fourth place.

STAA’s Henry Piasecki will join Bailey at McCauslin after shooting a 91, putting him in a tie with Three Lakes/Phelps’ Tyler Kimmerling-Keating for tenth place.

Theron Thayer finished in a three-way deadlock with Crivitz’s Jack Bauer and Carndon’s Desmond Soman for 15th place with a score of 95.

Chase Gromala shot 117 to place 29th overall, while Ryan Tuch’s 39th-place score of 133 rounded out the day for the Cavaliers.

Two Niagara golfers snatched up the final two individual Sectional spots, as Nate Olsen and Tommy Martin both shot 94 to tie for 13th place.

Alex Tripp (99) finished 20th, Mason Richtig (110) was 27th and Oren Loukus (135) was 36th overall.

Coleman was paced by a low-round score of 83 from Thomas Rhode, which was good for fourth overall.

Cameron Kimmell took seventh with an 89. Valerie Broderick (99) tied Tripp for 20th overall, Chase Gruber placed 26th with a 107, while Gavin Fochesato finished 33rd overall after shooting a 121.
