Extended School Year program students enjoy Fun Friday activities
Students in the Warwick Valley Central School District’s Extended School Year program enjoy Fun Friday activities in the gym at Sanfordville Elementary School on July 12, 2024. The theme of the week was camping. Students rotated between four stations: reading in the dark using flashlights, building a LEGO bridge to help a bear cross a river, making leaf rubbing collages and playing camp charades.
Rachel Rappaport
Sullivan County native Rachel Sacks Rappaport passed away in San Francisco, California, her home the last 12 years, on July 12. She was 97. Born and raised in Mountain Dale, the youngest of six, she graduated Mountain Dale High School as valedictorian in 1943. She lived in Monticello while still single, working as a legal stenographer for Nellie Childs Smith, the first female attorney there, in the ’40s. She married Bronx native Ralph Rappaport (d. 2008) in 1951. The couple lived in South Fallsburg for several years before moving to Woodridge in 1957, where they raised two daughters. Rachel maintained a home in Woodridge until 2013. Also called “Raye,” she was known for her red hair, outgoing personality, curiosity, genuine interest in people, and love of nature, animals, and singing.

Community events are planned in Hawley, including free evening movies in Bingham Park
Movies in Bingham Park, National Night Out and a community-wide yard sale are three of the special events this summer for everyone to enjoy in Hawley Borough. Scott Mead, the borough's public works supervisor as well as the Hawley fire chief, is coordinating the second season for Movies in the Park. He said at the July 10 council meeting that they are held on the last Saturday of the month, beginning at dusk. The first one was held July 5 (rescheduled from June 29). The series runs through December, when they are planning two movies around the time of Hawley Winterfest.
