Despite it all, the Cougars remained resilient. This persistence for excellence led the Cougars to the 2024 WIAA girls hockey state semifinals, hosted at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice...

They wouldn’t go away, until overtime arrived. Unfortunately, Onalaska pulled out a tough 52-50 overtime WIAA regional final win over the Norskies to end their season. “Unfortunately, it was another regional final heartbreaker,” said DeForest head coach Jerry Schwenn. “We fell behind early, and we were playing catch up most of the game.” The Norskies...

Underdog Cougars punch ticket to state
The Cap City Cougars have saved their best for last. An up-and-down regular season left them as the No. 5 seed in Sectional 4 for the 2024 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) girls hockey state tournament. That never seemed to matter to them, though. They’ve beaten all challengers as the underdog, eventually becoming the best the sectional had to offer. The run started back on Thursday, Feb. 15 with a win over No. 4 seed Baraboo. Things got serious in the following round as Cap...
In DeForest, some see bike use as threat to woodpecker population
Ecosystems and habitats, while they do have the ability to repair themselves and stay balanced, oftentimes are also fragile and can easily be disturbed. A seemingly minor change from the natural order of things can have ripple-like ramifications. On the Upper Yahara River Trail in DeForest, there is concern from some local citizens about off-trail biking disturbing the habitat of local species, particularly red headed woodpeckers, and a petition has been circulating to register that concern. ...

An Outdoorsman's Journal: Good times at Tip-Up Pike Jam
Hello friends, Just when I think my job could not be any more fun, it is. This week's column is all over the map as there is a lot to say and not space to say it. On Feb. 16, I arrived at The Waters Pier and Pub, which is the official headquarters for what I think may be the coolest fisheree in the state. Over the course of two days there would five bands playing on Friday and seven on Saturday on the shores...
Wrestling: Record-breaking year for Gold Medal grapplers
Gold Medal Wrestling is celebrating another record-breaking season with over 120 registered wrestlers from 4K through eighth grade, up from 93 last year. On Feb. 11, it was Gold Medal’s turn in the rotation to host Dunkin’ Duals, a special annual event for youth wrestlers of DeForest, Waunakee, Sauk Prairie and Monona Grove/McFarland, and sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts. Collectively over 300 youth wrestlers gained valuable experience on the mat, where it isn’t about wins or losses, placement on a bracket, or awards; it is an opportunity to hang out with teammates, wrestle some matches, and learn that we “donut ever give up”! DeForest High School wrestlers were on hand to work tables, ref matches, and serve as mascots, just one day after wrestling in their own regional tournament, giving back to the club where so many of them spent their youth careers. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament afforded Cap City one more shot. The No. 5 seed Cougars toppled No. 4 seed Baraboo in the regional opener, 3-2, to reach the regional title match against...
