The Rock County Fury girls hockey team is in the midst of a resurgent 2023-24 season. Low numbers limited the team’s potential last season, but the Fury still managed to tie for third in the Badger Conference standings. Boys swimming: Norskies, Monona Grove tie
The boys’ swim teams for DeForest and Monona Grove tied 85-85 on Tuesday, despite Carter O’Leary winning two individual events. O’Leary took first in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:57.14. He also won the 500 freestyle, taking first in 5:19.56, and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team that also included Jakson Wagner, Shawn Colbrooke and Wyatt Parker. The quartet placed first in 1:47.96. Erik Wiencierz topped the field in the 50 freestyle in 24.97, with Parker taking second in 25.34 and Kirby Colbrooke finishing third in 25.81. Parker also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.45, as Parker, Shawn Colbrooke, Wagner and O’Leary took first in the 400 freestyle, swimming to a time of 3:33.86. Monona Grove won the junior varsity meet by a score of 46-35.
'UniverCity' natural resources project to address Yahara phosphorus levels
The first of several UW-Madison student-led projects to address DeForest’s future needs was announced at the Tuesday, Jan. 16 village board meeting. Tucker Schmidt finished third in the 157-pound division to lead the DeForest wrestling team at Saturday’s Sparta Invitational. The Village of DeForest has received a grant to help fund a five-year Yahara River Habitat and Streambank Restoration Project aimed at improving water quality and offering more opportunities for paddlers. Rylan Oberg eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her DeForest girls’ basketball career, but Waunakee emerged victorious in Thursday’s 65-43 clash of Badger Large Conference rivals. Oberg became the seventh player in Norskies' history to join the 1,000-point club. Four Warriors scored in double figures, led by Claire Meudt’s 13 points. Tessa Bryan finished with 12, followed by Ellen Dotzler with 11 and Kyleigh Knutson’s 10 points. Ingolf Johnson created an auto service and repair business in 1926 on his farm, located west of Highway 10 (51), about one-half mile south of North Leeds.
